Safety & Tracking

Safety services for people with autism—like accident prevention and wandering response—are an important part of helping them stay safe while supporting independence. These services give parents and caregivers peace of mind and help protect autistic individuals in different settings.

Project Lifesaver
People enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small tracking device on their wrist or ankle. If someone goes missing, the caregiver contacts the local Project Lifesaver agency, and a trained emergency team begins searching right away. Since most people who wander are found close to home, this program helps responders locate them quickly—often within minutes instead of hours or days. On average, participants are found in about 30 minutes, which is much faster than standard search efforts.

Project Lifesaver is run by local first responder agencies, so details and costs can vary by location based on available funding or grants. This program and other tracking devices is not covered by a Virginia Medicaid Waiver.
